Hawthorne District

Overview

The Hawthorne District is a popular avant-garde neighborhood just across the Willamette River from Downtown that runs along Hawthorne Boulevard between 17th and 43rd Avenues.  The Boulevard is lined with locally-owned coffee shops, antique stores, cafes, and trendy clothing shops, many with a bohemian flavor reminiscent of the 70′s.

Hawthorne Boulevard has a rich nightlife and many of the pubs have sidewalk seating.  Landmarks in the Hawthorne District are: Powell’s Books Annex, the Hawthorne Bridge (the oldest vertical lift bridge in operation in the United States), and the Bagdad Theater & Pub, a Portland relic owned and restored to its original glory by the local McMenamins chain.

Parks & Recreation

Hawthorne sits adjacent to Laurelhurst Park, which covers over 25 acres of rolling hills under magnificent evergreen and flowering trees, and features paved walking paths, a large duck pond, ball courts and fields, picnic areas,  and its own community center.

Real Estate

Many of the homes along the tree-lined streets in the residential area are older craftsman and bungalow styles that are being restored to their original beauty.
